Modular
Small Expandable Dwelling - work in progress
The objective of this project is to develop a design for a dwelling
based on a 3.5m x 7m module. These dimensions are chosen because:- The size lends itself to efficient
prefabrication.
- A building frame of this size can be carried on
a standard flatbed truck without triggering “exceptional load” requirements, eg flags, police escort etc.
- A single module is large enough to provide
enough space for a single person or couple, and additional modules can be added
as/when required.
- The weight, 2 – 3 tonnes depending on the level
of completion, can be off-loaded and placed using a road-based crane.
- The
module can be constructed in machine-graded treated pine or cold-formed steel sections of moderate size.
-
Variations in roof/ceiling type can be accommodated, eg standard trusses, monopitch or raked ceiling.
- A limited range of fabrication drawings are
required, and are easy to modify.
-
The design is suitable for low-set or
slab-on-ground.
It
should be noted that it is not intended that the project will become
a proprietary product. To enforce this it may be necessary to place the
plans and specifications in the public domain. it will remain a basic
design and specification that
anyone can use. It is intended to develop this project by preparing
further drawings and obtaining engineering
certification to C2 cyclone rating.
